Dr. DEREK BAILEY
Dr. Derek W. Bailey is the Director of Research and Outreach at Deep Well Ranch in Prescott, Arizona. Derek is also Emeritus Professor of Range Science at New Mexico State University (NMSU) in Las Cruces, New Mexico. After growing up on a cattle ranch and farm in southern Colorado, Derek received his PhD in Range Science and his MS and BS degrees in Animal Science at Colorado State University. Derek worked as a researcher for Montana State University in Havre and USDA-ARS in Woodward, Oklahoma. He also was a range management consultant in Nevada and an extension agent in Arizona.
During his 19 years at NMSU, Derek conducted research in livestock behavior, grazing, rangeland sustainability and precision livestock management, as well as teaching courses in rangeland management, research methods and statistical analyses, low-stress livestock handling, plant communities, vegetation monitoring and rangeland restoration.
Currently, Derek is continuing his research in precision livestock management, livestock behavior and rangeland sustainability. He is collaborating with researchers at universities across the western US as well as researchers in Australia with the goal of expanding the cutting-edge research at Deep Well Ranch. Another part of Derek’s position at Deep Well Ranch is to facilitate outreach activities in conjunction with Cooperative Extension and other entities in rangeland management, agricultural sustainability and implementation of new technologies in ranching.

In 2024, Dr. Bailey received the Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Range Management.
